Recently, our team had the privilege of visiting the SOS Children's Villages Philippines in Alabang, Muntinlupa City. This visit allowed us to witness first hand the incredible work being done and the transformative impact on young lives.
For over five decades, SOS Children's Villages has been a beacon of care for children facing neglect and abandonment in the Philippines. Since 1967, they've provided a loving family environment for these children, ensuring they have a supportive home until they can stand on their own.
During our visit, we had the chance to explore the heart of the village. Established around the 1980s, the Alabang village comprises eight houses, each serving as a nurturing sanctuary for 8-10 children. What struck us profoundly was the devotion and love shown by the "house mothers," affectionately called "mama" (a Filipino endearment for "mother") by both the kids and SOS employees.
Meeting a house mother who had grown up in SOS and now dedicated two decades of her life to nurturing children amazed us. It was inspiring to learn that some children return to SOS as adults, paying forward the care they once received.
SOS Children's Villages operates on a foundation of compassion and support. House mothers are provided with a monthly budget for essentials like food and clothing, ensuring the children's needs are met. Education, a cornerstone for a brighter future, is made possible through sponsorships and donations, covering school supplies and tuition.
What struck us profoundly was the emphasis on a safe and nurturing environment. The SOS village maintains a "zero tolerance" policy against abuse, strictly safeguarding the well-being of every child, aligning with the Philippine Child Protection Act.
It was heart-warming to witness the children's access to resources, including a computer lab for homework and the restriction on gadgets until they pursue higher education. These measures aim not only for their immediate welfare but also to equip them for a successful future.
